Hamid succeeds, to the degree that he does, because he seeks to create a compelling character albeit one represents or communicates the ideas, experiences, and emotions of a culture rather than simply create a mouthpiece for political slogans. It is an interesting attempt to tell an interesting story and mirror the clash of worldviews that underlies much of our political debate. Your political perspective, or cultural one, may determine how you react but I found The Reluctant Fundamentalist to an entertaining and though provoking read.

Your review makes me want to read this book, to find out for myself how I feel about this issue in this light. Even though you didn't agree with elements of it you made it peak my curiousity on how this author views some very realistic isssues in our culture. I like the detail it provided verses the cover which completely turned me off. I am not all that interested in reading this subject but because you didn't agree with all of it but still enjoyed it and liked how it made you think. I think I will try it.
