The Sisters Grimm: The Everafter War by Michael Buckley

The bad thing about the Sisters Grim series by Michael Buckley is that they are full of excitement from start to end and each book leaves you wanting to immediately read the next!

Each book ends with a cliffhanger and so the reader must wait for the next book to be released.  This is not easy.

And the latest release, The Everafter War, is no different.  But there are a couple of new twists thrown in to ratchet up the tension to a whole new level. Spoilers of a sort below.

The whole series up until this point has been focused on Sabrina and Daphne Grimm finding a way to wake up their parents and reunite their family.  In book seven Henry and Veronica Grimm are finally awakened but it doesn’t quite turn out like Sabrina had hoped.

Her parents wake up in the middle of a brewing civil war in Ferryport Landing between the Scarlet Hand and the resisting army under Prince Charming’s command.  And it turns out her dad want nothing to do with everafters or magic.  He immediately demands the family leave and head for New York City.

This sets off a round of arguments and bidkering within the family.  Throw in the fact that her dad keeps treat Sabrina and Daphne as the children they were two years ago, and you have some unhappy and tension filled moments. This is not what Sabrina had in mind when she dreamed of getting her parents back.

And if that isn’t enough, the whole community is threatened by the war and Puck launches a series of attacks on Sabrina; each one worse than the last. Oh, and their is a traitor who is betraying their every move to the Sacarlet Hand and the dreaded master just might be someone she trusted as a friend.

And the ending finds Sabrina and Daphne pulled into one of the most famous stories of all!

With the Everafter War Michael Buckley again shows why this series has won the acclaim and popularity it has.  Each book has just the right amount of humor and seriousness; of plot and character development mixed with satire and slapstick.  He keeps the reader guessing – although both the traitor and the master are pretty easy to spot – and despite all the silliness (and the YA audience) the characters are surprisingly well developed. It is just an ideal light read for me and for kids of all ages.

My wife and I eagerly await each new book and immediately start fighting over who reads it first.  This year I gave it to her for Mother’s Day and let her read it first.  So if you haven’t started this great series, get going.  And if for some reason you were not aware book seven is out, same thing.

And of course, be sure to share with the actual young readers in your life …

  1. Sorry, but I have to disagree with one of your comments: the traitor/master was NOT easy to spot. Now that I know who it is, I've gone back and reread the books to find the clues but there's no way you knew who the Master was by Book Five or Six.

  2. Could Some one please tell me who the master is? i cant get my hands on book 7 and im dying to know!
